WHY BE TECH SALVY?

I think after taking this class, i have to make an effort to stay updates with new technologies. It seems like there's too many to keep track of and there's always a new version of something. How do i weeds out the useful technology from the useless? I guess it'll be harder to do that since i won't be taking this class anymore. In this class, I heard about a lot of technologies that was very foreign to me but also interesting. I how behind is our class in technology compared to the world? In the business world you'll always be working with IT to a certain extent and knowing the basics can be a asset and an advantage. Thanks for making the class interesting and the multiple choices on the final hard!!

Outsourcing

Getting training on oracle from someone outside the U.S. made me realize, how easy i could lose my job to someone who is more willing to learn about the new technologies and understand the new systems that we use for accounting. Forget worrying about peer-to-peer competition, I have to worry about the world competing for my job. Maybe not so excessive, but this makes me more aware of the fact that, in order to keep my job and advance, I have to be on top of my game. This means on top of all the new laws and regulations in accounting, as well as the current technologies that is poping up all over the place.

Oracle ERP

I just got a job recently as an accounting assistant at an electronic company. Interesting enough the system we use is Oracle ERP software which wee talked a lot about in class. To my surprise, most of the staff has no formal training on using the system. It more of a learn as you go environment, which from class I learned is very bad. I was one of the lucky few to be trained in this system because we had a specialist in Oracle ERP from our Taiwan branch as a temp. YES a specialist from Taiwan.

Second LIFE?

I tried downloading Second Life that other day after watching the clip in class about how it might provide competitive advantages to a company. I like the idea that you can have meetings across the globe or talk to customer service representatives of companies if you were to have a problem or quires about a product. Unfortunately, my video graphic card is outdated and I couldn't install the program. This is a good indication that i am probably behind the time in technology and it time for a new graphic card. I am too broke to be interested in second life at the moment but maybe in the future. Maybe when I realize I can afford a house in real life, I could by one in second life and be proud of my short comings. =)

My Major and Technology

Well my major is accounting and technology's impact on it is huge. Accounting is basically done through computer programs like Oracle ERP software for most medium to large firms . New tax laws and auditing standards, and changing technologies have shaped a lot of an accounting firm today.  Therefore, I feel that is necessary to stay updates with the types of systems and software used for accounting. Firms expect their employees to know a certain amount of information technology.
